Vieilli. [En parlant de Dieu] Qui exerce sa Providence (v. ce mot B en partic.). Provident il [Dieu] regardait d'un regard paternel le monde appareiller le long d'un beau rivage (PÉGUY, Ève, 1913, p. 712). Le dieu unique, (...) provident, qui règle les destinées de tous les peuples de la terre issus du premier couple qu'il a créé (Théol. cath. t. 4, 1 1920, p. 1018).

REM. Providentisme, subst. masc. Synon. rare de providentialisme. Si une conviction pouvait être une vertu, le fatalisme, ou plutôt le providentisme, serait la mienne! Je crois à l'action complète, toujours agissante, toujours présente, de la volonté de Dieu (LAMART., Voy. Orient, t. 1, 1835, p. 149).
